How to build a sales strategy: 7 questions every owner must answer
A sales strategy is not a document. It is seven decisions about who you sell to, at what price and how you know it works. With a checklist and answers.
- obchodní strategie
- vedení obchodního týmu
- B2B prodej

Summary: A sales strategy is a set of decisions about who you sell to, why you are different, how the deal flows and which numbers you steer by. A good one fits on a single page and every rep can recite it.
What a sales strategy is
It is a decision about segment, offer, customer journey and performance metrics. It is not a revenue plan or a deck for the bank. You recognise a real one by this: you can refuse a deal because of it.
7 questions every owner must answer
1. Who do we sell to, and who not?
Segment, company size, industry, decision-maker role. "Anyone interested" means there is no strategy.
2. Which problem do we solve, and how does the client notice it?
The problem in the client's words, not in product specs.
3. Why us and not the competition?
Three reasons your competitors cannot claim as well. If they can, they are not reasons.
4. How do clients enter the pipeline?
Referral, tender, outbound, marketing. Each channel demands a different sales approach.
5. What does the sales path look like step by step?
From first contact to signature: who does what, what must happen in each step, and when the deal moves on.
6. Which numbers do we steer by?
Five at most: new opportunities, step conversion, average deal, margin, cycle length.
7. Who owns what?
Names against acquisition, account care, proposals and reporting. Not "the sales department".
Turning answers into a working system
- Put the answers on one page. If they do not fit, they are not decisions.
- Test them against your last ten deals. How many fit the strategy? Under half means it is wishful thinking.
- Move them into the team meeting. The agenda is the best test — are you discussing the numbers you chose?
- Set the rhythm. Numbers weekly, deals monthly, the strategy itself quarterly.
- Reflect them in incentives. What you do not reward does not happen.
Most common mistakes
- The strategy lives in the owner's head, not on paper.
- Only revenue is measured, not the steps that create it.
- The segment is so broad that no argument can be specific.
- The change is announced, but meetings and reporting stay the same.
Questions and answers
How long does building a sales strategy take? Decisions land in two to four weeks including time inside the company. Establishing the rhythm takes another two to three months.
Who should be involved? The owner, the sales lead and one or two field reps. Without the field you get a strategy nobody can execute.
How do I know it works? Within eight weeks the steps move (meetings, conversion); within one or two quarters revenue and margin follow.
